As a member of the Modeling and Simulation Community, you will be interested
in the following special issues to be published in the Journal of Defense
Modeling and Simulation: Applications, Methodology, Technology:

.	Making Modeling & Simulation Ubiquitous

In recent times, a number of initiatives have been explored as ways to
reduce the time to develop a new operational/tactical system or to modify an
existing one. M&S is often considered one of the technologies that can help
meet these goals. The objective of this special issue is to highlight these
examples and show how M&S can be used to assist the acquisition community in
fielding systems to support the warfighters by giving a venue for them to
expose their knowledge and experience to the community at large.

.	Modeling & Simulation for Wounded Warrior Systems

Vast improvements in protection of forces have led to a change in the injury
types observed in wounded warriors. System descriptions, often focused on
the complexities of technical systems and subsequent program risk, are
under-represented in the realm of military medical systems for recovering
U.S. and Coalition Forces. This special issue is therefore interested in
contributions that illuminate life improving medical innovations across the
span from policy to specific programs, with an emphasis on measurable and
reproducible conclusions.

.	Verification, Validation and Accreditation in Modeling & Simulation

	Publication Expected: Spring/Summer 2013.

Verification, Validation and Accreditation (VV&A) is key in making models
and their subsequent simulations applicable for trustworthy analyses and
decision support in defense, safety, or emergency response modeling, and a
proxy for hardware test and evaluation (T&E). This special issue is
interested in novel / emerging modeling and simulation VV&A techniques and
processes that facilitate design, development, production and deployment of
models that effectively trade for their physical counterparts in reducing
T&E cost and / or time over the lifecycle of models from individual systems
to enterprise descriptions.

.	Network Science

	Publication Expected:  Spring/Summer 2012

The topic of network science, which is generally defined as "the study of
network representations of physical, biological, and social phenomena
leading to predictive models of these phenomena emanated from U.S.
Department of Defense (DoD) interests in network-centric warfare in the
early 1990s. This special issue is directed at network science research
results that create new modeling methodologies, or simulation approaches
such as those that utilize event-driven, process-oriented, federated
HLA/RTI, or agent based frameworks.

.	Modeling & Simulation of Unmanned Systems

	Publication Expected: Fall 2013

Current events highlight the importance of unmanned systems in protecting
both military and homeland defense forces.  Field robotics is expensive and
time consuming work that has little hope of exploring the vast spaces of
autonomous computations. This makes it ripe for simulation This special
issue seeks papers that advance machine autonomy through unique and
insightful application of simulation.

.	Modeling & Simulation of Architecture-based Systems

	Publication Expected: Fall 2013

Architectural descriptions via the Department of Defense Architectural
Framework are designed to inform major defense system acquisitions. While
initially focused on Command, Control, Communications, Computers,
Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, the goal of integrated
architectures, via the Joint Capability Integration and Development System
process, is to provide "best value" system performance in a timely manner.
"Best Value" has become increasingly important recently and
Architecture-based design is increasingly important to ensure the provision
of military effects with "80% solutions" and modeling and simulation is the
most cost-efficient technique to perform early design reviews. This special
issue is therefore interested in providing methods to evaluate both
component and aggregate architecture capabilities.

.	Modeling & Simulation in Human Terrain Systems

	Publication Expected: Summer 2012

Modeling, simulating and prognosticating the Human Terrain of deployed
force's areas of operation is recognized as being increasingly important for
U.S. and Coalition Forces during counter-insurgency and stability
operations. While marketing and advertising agencies have proven successes
in rapidly assessing niche populations and the ability to meet their wants
and needs, this is still a "white space" in the defense modeling /
simulation and tool building communities. This special issue is therefore
interested in contributions that forecast population response to different
messaging during the "clear / hold / build" phases of military operations.

.	Modeling & Simulation in Counter Improvised Explosive Device (IED)
Systems

	Publication Expected: Fall/Winter 2012

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) is the embodiment of a strategic
policy of area denial that provides asymmetric groups with an unprecedented
force multiplier, and implied legitimacy, at minimal capital cost. While
models have been built of the respective sensors and platforms that compose
candidate IED detection and mitigation solutions, it is only now that the
modeling and simulation community is stepping up to apply their intellectual
resources to this issue in its totality. This special issue is therefore
interested in novel / emerging modeling and simulation techniques that
address the design, development and production of effective counters to IEDs
from strategic resourcing to tactical employment.

.	Immersive Technologies in Support of Military Training and Education

	Publication Expected: Spring 2013

The motivation for this special issue is based upon recognition of the fact
that the technological disruption caused first by Serious Game technology is
being extended to include the impact of Virtual Worlds both of which clearly
have a significant role to play in support of military training and
education. The body of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of these
tools as experiential based learning mechanisms is beginning to grow as
creative trainers working closely with tool developers make improvements to
the technology and pedagogy associated with their use. This special edition
is intended to develop knowledge and improve understanding on how these
tools can best be described, developed and applied in support of military
training.
