Cedric,

do you have syntactical restrictions on the string you want to 
transform? Is it for instance always a simple arithmetic expression?
Does it contain variables (which ones)?
You may look into the RIACA parsers, developed using ANTLR, and possibly 
start from there if you want to modify the input syntax:
I know of parsers for GAP syntax,  for polynomials, for MAPLE.
