But, if you are defining what it contains, aren't you therefore ALSO
defining its properties?

It sounds like you want what used to be called a DEFMP, and is still (as
far as I know) being considered for OM3 under FMP type=defining". See also
the last paragraph of section 7.2 on my paper with Stratford (MKM 2008).
The idea here is "the definiens can be completely replaced by the
definiendum" (Principia Mathematics I, p. 11), which seems ot be what you
are asking for.
