 Surely many of these things are functions with arguments, not just
 representations or those highly unmathematical creatures,

 things like 'arg' and 'conjugate' have many unrelated meanings.

 There are many mystical assumptions about a plane (described as
 complex) behind all this. Please can we have some background on this
 geometry or stick to algebraic descriptions?
