 mainly as an arbiter of where to take branch cuts for inverse functions.
 Rather than show any bias between  say mathematica or maple or
 derive definitions, we (OM) just said we'd use whatever A&S used, except
 it then turned out they changed the definitions between various printings
 so we ended up having to specify a particular version. James could fill
 you in on the gory details:-)
